I am new to coaching and would like to do a short basic course first
If you are unsure about taking the step to become a qualified coach why not try an introductory course first, this is a great way to get an insight into coaching and find out if coaching is for you. Additionally, most of them are generic courses so if you're not yet sure on what sport you want to coach a generic course will be a great starter. There are various organisations that run short courses. We have summarised these below:
Sports Leaders UK
If you are keen to do an introductory course that will act as a stepping stone to becoming a coach, then you could start by doing a Sports Leader Award. You don't need to be a sporting superstar to get involved and the awards are available to everyone aged 14 or above. They are nationally recognised qualifications at levels 1, 2 & 3 and develop a range of leadership skills such as planning, preparing and delivering a sports session. The awards are multi sport so an ideal starting point for everyone wanting to get involved in leading or coaching sporting activities. Sports Leader Awards get you involved in learning by doing. You actually lead sports and physical activity as a volunteer as part of the course. You learn how to organise and motivate yourself and other people, and improve your communication skills. This can really boost your confidence and help you in work, education and life.

Dragon Sport
If you are interested in coaching children of primary school age various sports, such as athletics, cricket, football, hockey, netball, rugby, tennis or invasion games, the Dragon Sport programme may be for you. Dragon Sport is a Sports Council for Wales's initiative and is funded by the lottery. The programme heavily relies on volunteers to help run games and sporting activities for after school and community clubs. You don't need any experience as training and support is provided for all volunteers. The Dragon Sport Organisers workshop, of which attendance is a requirement of the scheme, introduces volunteers to the programme and provides great ideas on adapting and leading activities

Also, why not look at the national governing body's website for the sport(s) you are interested in. Some governing bodies in Wales run a basic or introductory course, so if you know what sport you want to coach why not take a look at their site.
