What can my governing body do for me?

Governing bodies are responsible for the organisation and administration of the entire sport; ultimately each governing body is responsible for the development of their sport throughout Wales. They deal with all issues regarding coaching and are therefore a key contact if you want to go on to the next level of coaching award. They will be able to provide you with information about the courses available, along with dates and times of courses running throughout Wales. The governing body will also be able to provide advice on the following:

  • Details of the coaching structure and what you need to do to progress your coaching
  • Courses running in your area
  • Any extra training (Continuous Professional Development) specific to the sport
  • Details of any coaching conferences
  • Obtaining Insurance
  • Becoming a member of the governing body

In addition to coaching information they will also be able to provide you with any information about the sport in general, for example details of sports clubs, provision of the sport in schools and any initiatives that are running for the development of the sport.

The Welsh Sports Association (WSA) are another important organisation in the administration of sport as they represent all the governing bodies of sport in Wales. WSA have compiled a database of all sports clubs in Wales so if you are interested in finding out about local clubs in your area take a look at their website.
